Pelzer, West Pelzer – One town some day?

Two topics related to the future of Pelzer and West Pelzer are in the air.

West Pelzer Mayor Peggy Paxton confirmed that she and the town council have been approached informally, so far, by representatives and residents of Pelzer and the surrounding mill village about a possible merger of the two towns.

GWBA readies for Party in the Park May 31

The Greater Williamston Business Association (GWBA) is planning an event on Friday, May 31, that will provide free entertainment and activities for the Williamston community and surrounding area while promoting local business.

“Party in the Park” will feature live entertainment by one of the Upstate’s favorite bands, the Eric Scott Band. Free Kids’ Activities will be provided by the GWBA from 5 pm-8:30pm with Eddie’s Trackless Trains and 3 Kids Inflatables. The park playground will be open to kids until the event ends, organizers said.

Organizers preparing for new ParkFest Celebration Event – Honoring First Responders

Organizers of “ParkFest” are gearing up for the final days of preparation for a new event they hope will be an annual one for the Town of Williamston.

Jack Ellenburg and Nancy Carroll, with help and encouragement from Williamston Mayor Mack Durham, the Town of Williamston, the Defenders Law Enforcement Motorcycle group and others, are putting the final touches on the event which is being billed as “A Hero’s Celebration.”

Job creation up, unemployment down in Anderson County

Anderson County has built an enviable reputation in the last few years for attracting manufacturing and the quality jobs that usually accompany such large capital investments.

The efforts that have led to those investments and jobs have clearly paid off, as the unemployment rate in the county has reached its lowest point since July 2008. Figures released by the county this week show unemployment at 6.8 per cent, down from 8.3 per cent in April of 2012.The percentage of unemployed peaked at 9.2 per cent in June and July of last year.

Wilson, Floyd spar on Preston litigation

Recent and persistent reports in the local daily newspaper that the County’s lawsuit against Joey Preston has cost $2.8 million have been questioned by members of the Council, who argue that the amount is the total for all litigation during the five years since Preston received his severance package.

Piedmont approves budget with cost of living raise – For Firefighters

The Piedmont Public Service Commission met Monday night, moving briskly through the agenda, and giving second reading approval to the 2013-2014 budget.

The budget, as proposed, will bring the complement of full time firefighters to fifteen, and will, for the first time in three years, provide a cost of living increase of three per cent. The budget remains balanced, due to an amended formula for receiving revenues from Greenville County; there will be no millage increase.

Sheriff’s Deputies help woman to safety

Two Anderson County deputies saved the life of a Williamston resident Saturday by pulling her from the Saluda River.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Kari Paige Woody, 25, of Williamston, was helpless and unable to move in the water. She was clinging to a tree limb for her life. Woody, who could not swim, attempted to cross the river on a tree limb. After she became distressed and unable to move, she screamed for help.

Barbecue Festival and Cookoff this weekend

Williamston’s first big event of the season, the Pig in the Park Barbecue Cookoff and Festival will be held in Williamston’s Mineral Spring Park this weekend.

Sponsored by the Williamton Masonic Lodge, the two day event will feature 24 cooking teams from all over SC and one from NC who will be set up and cooking their barbecue specialties in the park.
