County Council members vary opinions on variety of issues

The meeting was marked by a growing friction between District Two Councilwoman Gracie Floyd and the rest of Council, particularly District One Councilman Francis Crowder.

By all appearances, the budget process underway within the Anderson County Council is going to be contentious, despite efforts by Chairman Tom Allen to encourage the individual members to prepare and to research any issues they have with the proposed budget.

Duke Sandwich operation coming to Powdersville

The Anderson County Council voted Tuesday night to give final approval to an incentive package for Duke Sandwich Productions, which plans to invest $5 million in the Powdersville area. The company, which makes a wide variety of sandwich spreads, dips, dressings, and dessert items, will occupy and refurbish the former Rock ten facility at 211 Pine Road. Forty five jobs are expected to be created over the next five years.

Anderson County recognizes success in attracting industry

Anderson County’s recent success in attracting industry and jobs were recognized Tuesday night, as the County Council passed a resolution recognizing those achievements.

Burriss Nelson, director of the economic development office, accepted the resolution and the praise on behalf of all the members of the county’s team. The County’s most recent success, the retention and expansion of the existing Michelin plant, is just the latest in a string of accomplishments.

Freemantle lawsuit on Preston contract goes before State Supreme Court

The South Carolina Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday on whether a lawsuit filed by Rick Freemantle was incorrectly dismissed by Judge Cordell Maddox almost two years ago.

The lawsuit, filed by the frequent candidate for the District Six County Council seat, was filed as a class action lawsuit and seeks to recover the funds paid to former county administrator Joey Preston by the lame duck 2008 Council.

ACTC funds approved for paving in park

The Anderson County Transportation Committee approved $50,000 in funds to be used in repaving the section of Spring Street that runs through the Mineral Spring Park in Williamston.

Economic incentives benefit existing companies

The majority of the agenda at Tuesday night’s County Council meeting dealt with economic development, as Council discussed and approved a number of agreements with companies already located in Anderson, or considering coming here.

Projects expand economic development

Anderson County continues to pursue and attract economic development opportunities. Two projects are currently progressing, as the County Council continues to support incentives offered to entice various businesses and industries.

Cooper recognized for recruiting efforts

Former State representative Dan Cooper, of Powdersville, has been honored for his efforts to attract jobs and industry to Anderson County. Cooper, who sat for six years as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee prior to his abrupt resignation from the House, was nominated by the Anderson County Economic Development Board as Ambassador of Economic Development for the County.

Dolly Cooper Park to be key facility in river recreational use

A small crowd gathered at the Powdersville Library Tuesday night to hear the latest plans for the Dolly Cooper Park.

Matt Shell, Anderson County’s recreation director, explained that the immediate plans for use of the park is shifting away from ball fields and soccer fields and towards expanded use of the river. “The river and the opportunities it offers are going to carry this park for a good while,” said Shell.
