County approves economic incentives

Anderson County continues to retain existing businesses, and attract new ones, often with a series of economic incentives. Such was the case at Tuesday’s County Council meeting.
Two such incentive packages were approved Tuesday night. The first one was a combination of a thirty year fee in lieu of taxes agreement and inclusion in a multi-county industrial park, which also brings certain incentives with it. The Timken Company of Honea Path will receive those incentives following two more readings of the ordinance.

SCWorks Jobs Fair coming to area

The Anderson SC Works Center along with the Palmetto Area Economic Development Committee and the Anderson County Office of Economic Development, will hold a Job Fair at Palmetto High School in Williamston on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, from 9 a.m. to-11:30a.m.

13 District One schools receive gold, silver awards

Thirteen eligible schools in School District One received Gold or Silver Awards by the State Department of Education for either general performance, closing achievement gaps or growth in achievement.
“This is the first time all eligible schools are receiving recognition for their students overall academic achievement,” said Superintendent Dr. Wayne Fowler.

Republican women to meet

The  Anderson County Republican Women will meet Monday, March 26 at 6 p.m. for a dutch treat dinner at Main Street Deli, located on N. Main Street in Anderson. Cost of the meal is $10 per person. The business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with special guest speaker, SC Representative Brian White. Rep. White represents House District 6 and is the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committtee. He was elected in 2000 and has filed for reelection in November.

Pelzer man arrested for manufacturing meth

Anderson County Catch Team Members responded to a residence of 103 Law Street Pelzer after receiving a complaint  that methamphetamine was being manufactured.

Bluegrass under the stars April 7 at Tri-County Tec

Little Roy and Lizzy, recent inductees into America’s Old Time Country Music and Fiddlers Halls of Fame, will headline Tri-County Technical College’s Seventh Annual Bluegrass under the Stars concert.
The community is invited to attend Bluegrass under the Stars, a free concert and fireworks event for the family set for Saturday, April 7, from 6-9:30 p.m. in the amphitheater on the Pendleton Campus.

WYA to hold opening day activities this Saturday

The Wren Youth Association (WYA) will have Opening Day activities this Saturday, March 17 marking the beginning of Spring baseball and softball season. This year, the WYA is celebrating 30 years of serving the youth of the Powdersville-Wren community.
Opening Day festivities at Hurricane Springs Park will include a parade of teams, ball games, raffles and fun things for kids to do.

CYT to present The Music Man Jr

Christian Youth Theater (CYT) Upstate, Theater for kids will present Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man Jr” on stage March 16-18 at the Palmetto Middle School Auditorium.
The cast is made up entirely of students ages 8 to 18 who come from all over the Upstate to share their gifts and talents on stage said Heather Knapik, area coordinator for the organization.

Cub Scouts tour Journal

Cub Scout Den 5 Pack 13 recently toured The Journal. Journal Managing Editor David Meade explained the process of gathering news, laying out the newspaper pages, printing and distribution to scouts and their parents. Pictured (l-r) are Meade and scouts Nolan Wienke, Michael Zakrzwski and Alex Cochrane.

Williamston Police Report

Williamston Police Officers reported a light week of incidents. Among incidents investigated were:
Mar. 9 – Harold Maurice Dean, 55, 9 Washington St., Williamston was arrested for driving under suspension after a vehicle was obsreved on Bigby St., and Mattison St. Sgt. E. T. Hutchins investigated.
Mar. 9 – Gary Zachariah Thomas, 37, 148 Lebby St., Pelzer was arrested for larceny and possession of drug paraphernalia after a white Ford pick-up truck was observed partially blocking traffic on Mill St. Officers found a needle and a glass bottle in the vehicle. Sgt. D. W. Bryant, L. E. Mulz investigated.
