2012 is turning into a great year for Evelyn “Eckie” Jordan

By David Meade – The South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame 2012 Class induction ceremony was held Monday in Columbia. Among the eight individuals to receive the state’s highest athletic honor was AAU and Pelzer basketball legend Evelyn “Eckie” Jordan. Jordan, who now resides in Williamston, was born and raised in Pelzer where she honed her basketball skills in the Pelzer gym. Those skills led to three national championships, a gold medal and Hall of Fame recognition in two states.

Pelzer to raise fees, cut costs

During their meeting Friday, Pelzer Town Council took actions including approving an appointment to the election commission, providing security fencing, and measures to raise fees and cut costs by reducing street lights, changing town hours and making changes at the town’s swimming pool.

A two month old baby died Tuesday after he apparently slipped down a pillow and suffocated while sleeping in the same bed with his parents, Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown said. The tragic death occurred at 34 June Avenue in Pelzer. It is the third death of its kind in Anderson County this year, according to McCown.

Pelzer to raise fees, cut some costs

The Town of Pelzer officially has a new mayor. Councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem Steve McGregor was released from duties as a councilman and sworn in as the town’s mayor during the Pelzer Town Council meeting Friday.

McGregor has been serving as head of the town since former mayor Kenneth Davis resigned recently.

Council approved an appointment to the election commission, several requests and discussed reducing the number of street lights, changing town hours office hours and providing security fencing around the town maintenance shed and more.

Firefighters worked through the night and into the day Wednesday to contain a hot fiery blaze fueled by dry wooden pallets. The fire spread into a smaller warehouse located behind this building that was storing pallets. Smoke was still rising from the area late Wednesday afternoon. The building in the foreground burned about a year ago.  

Area firefighters battle warehouse fire

Firefighters from more than five fire departments battled a blaze overnight that engulfed a Pelzer warehouse filled with pallets.

Officials said the warehouse had extremely dry pallets stacked ten to twelve feet high which contributed to the massive blaze. The building was one of the old Pelzer mill warehouse buildings that were left standing after the mill was demolished.

(Photo by David Rogers) – Firefighters battled a fire late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning in Pelzer. Hundreds of pallets were on fire at the warehouse located at the old lower mill site when West Pelzer firefighters arrived just after 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Anderson County Fire Chief Billy Gibson said the fire started in pallets outside, moved into one building and became fully involved.

Anthony benefit April 14

There will be a benefit fundraiser for Tammy Harmon Anthony on April 14 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pelzer Gym.

To meet Donnie Seigler with his smile and lively personality you would never know that he is fighting the battle of his life. He has lived with Acid Reflux Disease for the past 8 years and the doctors have been treating it by medication. Donnie also went every six months for an Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) a test to examine the lining of the esophagus. All of Donnie’s tests had been negative until this past December when he found out that he had Esophageal Cancer and it was at Stage 4.

Special election for council seat

The Town of Pelzer seems determined to have a special election this summer.

Following the unexpected resignation of former Mayor Kenneth Davis earlier this year, Councilman and mayor pro tem Steve McGregor assumed the Mayor’s job, and a special election was set for the thirteenth Tuesday after Davis’s resignation.
