Relay for Life event schedule

The Second Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of North Anderson gets underway May 4 at 7 pm at Wren High School. The cancer awareness and fundraiser event will feature lots of entertainment as it is held overnight. Individuals and teams will camp out at the football stadium with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening.

Walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer when the Second Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of North Anderson gets underway with teams of residents gathering at Wren High School on May 4 at 7 pm. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening.

Deposition held in Freemantle libel suit

The libel lawsuit brought by Doreen Montepara against radio talk show host Rick Driver, Rick Freemantle, and reporter Stan Welch continued to grind along desultorily Tuesday afternoon as Freemantle was deposed by Montepara’s attorney, Candy Kern Fuller.

The deposition lasted just over an hour, and covered much the same ground that Driver’s had covered a couple of weeks ago. Freemantle had been scheduled for deposition that same day, but could not attend.

The securities case against former county councilman Ron Wilson moved forward this week, as United States Attorney Bill Nettles filed a brief seeking the appointment of a federal receiver for Wilson’s assets.

Concrete Primary Carnival April 27

Concrete Primary School will present their Carnival on Friday, April 27 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Powdersville community event will be held from 5 to 8:30 at 535 Powdersville Main.

Father, daughter killed in accident

Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown works an accident scene where a father and daughter were killed Friday night. The father was driving west on Highway 8/81 when he apparently crossed the center line and was struck by another vehicle.

Cooper recognized by State for industry recruitment efforts

Dan Cooper, of Parker Poe Consulting was recently honored by Gov. Nikki Haley and Secretary of Commerce, Bobby Hitt for being a strong leader in recruitment of industry in Anderson County. He has been an advocate for the existing industries and worked tirelessly to improve the county’s assets, state officials said. Cooper has assisted businesses and organizations in a number of education, infrastructure and workforce needs.

Duke Sandwich operation coming to Powdersville

The Anderson County Council voted Tuesday night to give final approval to an incentive package for Duke Sandwich Productions, which plans to invest $5 million in the Powdersville area. The company, which makes a wide variety of sandwich spreads, dips, dressings, and dessert items, will occupy and refurbish the former Rock ten facility at 211 Pine Road. Forty five jobs are expected to be created over the next five years.

Freemantle lawsuit on Preston contract goes before State Supreme Court

The South Carolina Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday on whether a lawsuit filed by Rick Freemantle was incorrectly dismissed by Judge Cordell Maddox almost two years ago.

The lawsuit, filed by the frequent candidate for the District Six County Council seat, was filed as a class action lawsuit and seeks to recover the funds paid to former county administrator Joey Preston by the lame duck 2008 Council.

Orr finishes 94th in Boston Marathon

Brad Orr of Rock Hill finished 94th overall in the 2012 Boston Marathon, running the 26.2 mile race in 2:42:33.

Orr said he “just tried to hold it together” during the race and that “it was a rough day out there.” He was cramping from head to toe towards the end but he got through it.
