Town foots bill for water line replacement, Town Hall repairs

By Stan Welch – The West Pelzer Town Council hauled out the checkbook Monday night, paying an emergency water repair bill, to the tune of nearly $20,000 as well as purchasing a new computer for the Clerk’s office and repairing the ceiling in the Town Hall. The repair, involving 14 feet of water line, restored service to six houses in an area on Ponderosa Road. The houses had lost virtually all water pressure, according to Mayor Paxton. “It would take them hours to fill a bathtub. These folks were suffering, and the repairs simply had to be made.”

Work to begin soon on Chapman Park

Work is expected to begin on Chapman Park in the next two weeks, according to Mayor Peggy Paxton. She told the Town Council that the final contractual details had been worked out and the contracts delivered.

Resident alerted by smoke detector

West Pelzer and Whitefield firefighters battled a mobile home fire early Tuesday morning. The mobile home, located at 825 Joe Black Road was a total loss. The resident was awakened be her smoke detector and was able to get out safely. Williamston EMS checked the woman at the scene and she was not transported to a hospital. (Photo by David Rogers)

Motorcycle chase ends in arrest

West Pelzer officer Jeremy Sargent and Anderson County Deputy Kevin Evatt arrest the driver of a motorcycle following a chase Wednesday afternoon. Sargent attempted to stop the motorcycle after observing the passenger not on a seat, but riding in an unsafe manner, on the rear fender.

Big Creek Water replacing lines

The Big Creek Water District will begin replacing more than 24 miles of old water lines in the coming weeks, according to general manager Chuck Cortez. Cortez told The Journal that 128,000 feet of line, originally installed in the late Sixties and early Seventies will be replaced over the next several months. The old line, comprised of PVC pipe, will be replaced by iron pipe, which Cortez says should have a life of seventy to eighty years. “Hopefully, we won’t have to do this again anytime soon.”

Home damaged Irby Road

West Pelzer Fire Picture fundraiser underway

West Pelzer Fire Chief David Huff said a representative from the fire department will be contacting local residents for their annual picture fundraiser. “I would like to take this opportunity to let you know that we are starting our annual picture fundraiser. A representative from the fire department will be coming around to all of the residences in our fire district to offer you an opportunity to get your family’s picture taken.”

West Pelzer to change office hours

Beginning March 26, West Pelzer Town Hall and Municipal Court will be open Monday – Thursday 8 am – 5 pm, Friday 8 am – 12 pm and closed each day from 12pm – 1pm for lunch. Payments may be made in the office during open hours, but may be left in drop box if closed. The Town now accepts credit/debit cards for water/sewer payments, business license fees and court fines, said Town Clerk Paula Payton.

West Pelzer looks at taxes, property and economic development

The West Pelzer Town Council extended an agreement with the county to collect taxes, transferred property to a citizen and heard a report on Economic Development during their meeting Monday.

Council voted unanimously to extend the agreement with Anderson County to allow the County to collect property taxes on behalf of the Town.

Palmetto Area Economic Development Committee to meet with state officials

A special meeting of local officials working on economic development in the Williamston, Pelzer and West Pelzer area will be held Friday, Feb. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Anderson School District One office in Williamston. Representatives of the Department of Commerce, Anderson County and others are expected to attend.
