Pelzer, West Pelzer – One town some day?

Two topics related to the future of Pelzer and West Pelzer are in the air.

West Pelzer Mayor Peggy Paxton confirmed that she and the town council have been approached informally, so far, by representatives and residents of Pelzer and the surrounding mill village about a possible merger of the two towns.

Change in traffic law corrects unintended consequences

During their regular meeting Monday, West Pelzer Town Council approved changes in the wording of a traffic law because of unintended consequences and established guidelines for public comments during meetings.

The traffic law, dealing with what was called careless operation of a motor vehicle, was intended to allow an alternative to imposing points on a motorist.

West Pelzer, Williamston sign mutual aid agreement

The towns and police departments of Williamston and West Pelzer have entered into a mutual aid agreement that allows either agency to call on the other for additional law enforcement resources in times of emergency or unusual need.

The West Pelzer Town Council approved the agreement Monday night. Williamston did so last week at their Council meeting. Both police Chief Mike Clardy and Chief Tony Taylor signed off on the agreement.

West Pelzer Police investigating PTO embezzlement

The West Pelzer Police Department is investigating an incident of embezzlement involving a member of the West Pelzer Elementary School PTO which resulted in the school’s spring fling event being cancelled.

According to West Pelzer Police Chief M. D. Clardy, approximately $3300 of PTO funds was reported taken and converted to personal use by a member of the PTO. The incident is under investigation and no arrest has been made.

Main St.SC program presented to community

Approximately forty residents, business owners, and elected officials gathered to hear an official of the South Carolina Municipal Association’s Main Street program make her pitch Tuesday evening.

Beppie LeGrande gave a presentation explaining the process that the downtown revitalization program offers to small towns. The program, which began in the late 1970s, and arrived in South Carolina in 1985, began in response to the emergence of malls and big box stores which often sucked the business from the downtown areas.

Information on Main St. SC program to be presented to public Tuesday

The Palmetto Economic Development Group and the Towns of Williamston, Pelzer and West Pelzer invite the public and the business community to an informational meeting to learn about the Main Street SC program which the three towns are considering. The meeting will be next Tuesday, Apr. 30 at 7 p.m. at Palmetto High School.

West Pelzer Council hears information on SC Main St. Program

Efforts to forge a cooperative effort between the three towns in this corner of the county continued Monday night, as Williamston Mayor Mack Durham appeared before the West Pelzer Town Council and explained the benefits of involvement in the Main Street SC revitalization program. Durham, who along with WP town councilman Blake Sanders also serves on the Palmetto Area Economic Development board, stressed the value of the three towns, Pelzer, West Pelzer and Williamston, speaking with one voice.

West Pelzer updating computer equipment

The West Pelzer Town Council quickly took care of a few housekeeping matters before adjourning in less than a half hour Monday night.

The replacement of office equipment was at the top of the list. Mayor Peggy Paxton informed Council that the county will no longer provide the computer equipment used by the Town’s court clerk.

West Pelzer officials not pleased with streetscape results

West Pelzer officials expressed concerns about the town’s streetscape and approved funds for security for town hall during a recent meeting of Council.

West Pelzer Police Chief Mike Clardy reported an increase in police calls over the last year of more than thirty per cent, or 5007 calls. Of those calls, five hundred seventy three were reportable incidents; and of that number, 286, or almost exactly half, of those resulted in arrest, with 286.

Holiday Schedules

With Christmas and New Years falling on a Tuesday, area municipalities and businesses will have special hours and schedules for their services. The following schedules will be in effect for the Town of Williamston, Anderson County Convenience Centers, the Town of West Pelzer and The Journal.
