New wall mural on display at town hall

A new wall mural has recently been painted in the front office of the Willamston Municipal Center. The mural, painted by Dacusville artist Jendi Lindsay, depicts the spring house gazebo and spring in Mineral Spring Park.

Lindsay painted the massive wall mural which includes details right down to flowers, bricks and flowing spring water in just one weekend. The project was funded by the Williamston Springwater Committee.

Celebrate Independence on June 29

rez Fireworks 3The Town of Williamston will hold their Independence Day celebration and fireworks on Saturday, June 29. Events planned include antique fire truck rides, music, kids’ inflatables, and specials on food items at McDonald’s Restaurant.

McDonald’s will also co-sponsor a cruise-in car show with the Williamston Fire Department. There

GWBA planning 2nd Party in the Park

After the tremendous success of the first “Party in the Park” held recently in Williamston’s Mineral Spring Park, The Greater Williamston Business Association (GWBA) has decided to do it again. During their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, GWBAmembers approved Friday August 9 as the date for their next “Party in the Park” event.

The up and coming Outshyne band will be performing at the event which features an evening of free music and other fun activities for families while promoting local businesses.

Pond owner gets help

The Williamston woman who owns a dam recently declared unsafe by the state says she has a glimmer of hope, thanks to an article that ran last week in The Journal about her problem.

Ramona Wesley, of 20 Moorings Drive, received an order from DHEC’s department of Dams and Reservoir Safety on May 2. That letter informed her that the Department has conducted a survey and determined the dam that creates the ponds to be unsafe.

Town makes committment to revitalization program

Williamston Town Council approved their 2013-14 budget Monday with funding included for a new program that will help the town in revitalization and economic development efforts. The $78,043 in funding for the Main Street SC program provides for first year start up costs including a paid coordinator for the program which is offered through the SC Municipal Association.

Williamston Town Council approves $3.99 million budget

Williamston Town Council approved the 2013-2014 budget Monday, this time with funding for the Main St. SC revitalization program. The budget passed on second reading with a 3-2 vote after Mayor Mack Durham made a motion to pass it including $78,043 for the revitalization program. Mayor Durham, Councilman Tony Hagood and Councilman Rockey Burgess were in favor. Councilmen David Harvell and Otis Scott were opposed (See separate story). First reading on the budget was unanimously approved at the last meeting of council after Scott made a motion to remove the funding, a point he wanted clarified in the minutes at the start of the June 2 meeting.

Party in the Park gets great response – GWBA

The first Greater Williamston Business Association (GWBA) “Party in the Park” held Friday was a big hit for local residents who came out to enjoy an evening of free family entertainment and for the organization. More than 1200 people attended the event which included kids activities, food by local restaurants/vendors and live music provided by the Eric Scott Band. They also enjoyed line dancing and DJ music by Choice Entertainment.

ParkFest turnout not as expected

Although turnout for a new festival type event called “ParkFest – A Heros Celebration” was not what organizers expected, those who did attend were treated to a first class recognition program for local first responders along with music, fun and food. Mayor Mack Durham, who encouraged the event as part of his plan to bring more festivals and activities to the town said he thought the event went good for a first time event planned on a short timeline. “It was a good first year event,” he said. “The first responders were happy with the recognition.”

Libertarians celebrate Carolina Day June 22

The Anderson County Libertarians will hold their annual Carolina Day Picnic on Saturday, June 22, at 1 pm in Williamston’s Mineral Spring Park. The public is invited for fun, food, fellowship and political discussions as area Libertarians celebrate Carolina Day. It is a covered dish picnic that will be held in one of the covered shelters and there will be snacks and drinks available.

Town begins codes violation enforcement

Beginning today, Williamston Mayor Mack Durham and the Williamston Police Department are kicking off “Operation Clean Up.” Williamston Police Chief Tony Taylor said officers will be enforcing violations of the town’s codes and ordinances including tall grass/weeds and junk.
