Historic cannon returns home for anniversary event

Williamston’s Historic Canon, “Miss Annie Lee” was a key attraction in an event celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Noble Cannon, one of the most significant Civil War weapons to emerge from Georgia. The authentic brass Noble Cannon produced in Rome, Georgia presented four firings Thursday during a homecoming celebration in its birthplace of Rome.

2012 is turning into a great year for Evelyn “Eckie” Jordan

By David Meade – The South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame 2012 Class induction ceremony was held Monday in Columbia. Among the eight individuals to receive the state’s highest athletic honor was AAU and Pelzer basketball legend Evelyn “Eckie” Jordan. Jordan, who now resides in Williamston, was born and raised in Pelzer where she honed her basketball skills in the Pelzer gym. Those skills led to three national championships, a gold medal and Hall of Fame recognition in two states.

Ryan Rector hit a home run in the eighth inning of the first game of the AA State Championship series to give Palmetto a win over Dillion Monday. The Mustangs (31-6) will return to Williamston to host the Wildcats (27-4) in the second game in the best-of- three series on Wednesday.

The softball team will travel to Dillion for a 6 p.m. game today (Monday) in the AA softball state championship series.

Fleeing suspect held at gunpoint by homeowner until deputies arrive

(Photo by David Rogers) – Carl Ensworth Lanphear, 22, was arrested by the Sheriff’s Deputies after more than two dozen officers from Anderson and Greenville counties were involved in a hunt for him Wednesday night. Lanphear led deputies on a car chase on S.C. 8 in Pelzer which ended with him being held at gunpoint when he entered a home in Greenville County. The homeowner, at 133 Meares Drive in Pelzer, held the fleeing suspect at gunpoint until authorities arrived.
