Students present $6000 check for Veterans Honor Flight

The Palmetto High School Air Force JROTC and the Palmetto High Student Council presented a check for $6,000 to Honor Flight Upstate South Carolina today (Wednesday, February 22) at Palmetto High School. Students at Palmetto High School and Cedar Grove Elementary supported the fundraiser for the upcoming spring Honor Flight that will depart from Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport. Pictured are Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper, Palmetto High Principal Adam Wardlaw, Student Body President Adam Wardlaw and Cadet Colonel Mikaela Mauldin. Skipper, who is on the Honor Flight Board for the upstate, accepted the check from the students.

Driver escapes injury

The driver of a vehicle escaped serious injury for himself and others when a medical condition caused him to lose control of his vehicle on Hamilton St. Monday.

More than 200 people attended The “Williamston’s Got Talent” show fundraiser held Saturday evening at the Caroline Community Center in Williamston.

Winners were: 1st place – Austin Irby with a crowd pleasing rendition of “Mean Woman Blues” by Elvis (center). 2nd place – Adams Family scene and song from the musical “Annie” entitled “It’s a hard knock life” with Clara, Emma, Audrey and Olivia Adams 9right). 3rdplace -Michael Davis-singing a country song (left).

Town approves Milliken property purchase

 In a very brief meeting Thursday morning, Williamston Town Council unanimously approved second reading on the purchase of approximately 70 acres of land that town officials hope will spur economic development for the town.

The two tracts of land are being purchased from the Milliken/Pacolet company will be used for an industrial development site and an outdoor lab site, according to Williamston Mayor Carthel Crout.

Kart racing in Possum Kingdom

Go Kart racers from all over the country participated in one of the largest races in the sport over the weekend. The Possum Kingdom Super Speedway hosted the DynoCams Tri-State Pro Series Kart Race drew approximately 1000 entries who competed for $40,000 in prize money.

Powdersville business destroyed by fire

A Powdersville business was destroyed by an early morning fire Tuesday. Foothills Insulation, located on Assembly Drive was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters from Powdersville and Wren arrived minutes after receiving the call.

Mustang C team ends season with perfect record

MS Boys Basketball Conference Championship Game-3

The Palmetto Middle School boys basketball team put the finishing touches on a perfect season by winning last weekend’s Skyline Middle School Conference Tournament. First-year coaches Will Clarke and Terrance Wilson saw their C-Team Mustangs post a 12-0 record to win the S.M.S.C. regular season title, then take both of their postseason games to bring home the tournament trophy and a perfect overall record of 14-0.

Mahaffey named Anderson County Firefighter of the Year

West Pelzer Firefighter Dale Mahaffey (left) was recently honored by the Anderson County Fire as the Anderson County Firefighter of the Year. Anderson County Fire Chief Billy Gibson presented the award during the banquet held at the Anderson Civic Center January 23. West Pelzer Firefighter Chase Maddox was awarded the Courage and Life Saving Award. Mahaffey joined the station in 1983 at the age of 14 and has responded to fire calls for 18 years.
