Shriners offer free screening

The Greenville Shriners Hospital invites all children under age 18 to a FREE orthopaedic screening. The screening will help identify children in the area who can benefit from the expert care provided at Shriners Hospitals for Children. The free screening will be held on Saturday, May 4, at the Greenville Shriners Hospital located at 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, from 9 AM-12 PM.

Wild Hog seminar

Anderson County Council Vice-Chair Cindy Wilson and the Town of Williamston will host a wild hog control seminar on Wednesday, May 1 at Williamston Town Hall. The presenters will be Noel Myers and Robert Byrd with the USDA Wildlife Services Office. The program is scheduled to run from 1PM to 3:30 PM.

Agenda topics will include: Wild/Feral Pig Management Strategies; Hunting/trapping regulations; Building Partnerships and Outdoor Trap Demonstrations (weather permitting). Duncan, Scott luncheon May 2

The Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Congressional luncheon featuring U.S. House Representative Jeff Duncan and U.S. Senator Tim Scott. The event will be held on Thursday, May 2 from 12:15 – 1:30 pm at the Anderson Campus of Tri-county Technical College located at 511 Michelin Boulevard in Anderson.

Both Representative Duncan, a South Carolina Republican for the 3rd District, and Congressman Scott, a South Carolina Republican, will give their respective updates from Washington, DC.

Anderson Area Chamber member registration is $30, and non-member registration is $35. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, April 30.

Wildcat Theater Guild to present Peter Pan

The Wildcat Theatre Guild will present their production of Peter Pan in performances over the next two weekends, April 19-21 and Apr 25-28. All shows are at 7 p.m., except the Sunday performances which are at 3 pm. The production, under the direction of Will Ragland, features more than 100 actors from several local elementary schools, middle schools, and Woodmont High. It will include actual flying with the help of Flying by Foy, a company that has been involved with the Grammys, AMAs and several movies including Willy Wonka.

Blue Ridge Fest set for May 10

The days are winding down in anticipation of Blue Ridge Fest 2013. This big Upstate event is in its 16th year, and 13 area charitable organizations are looking to benefit from its proceeds. All activities will take place at the Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative office and grounds, 734 West Main Street in Pickens on Friday, May 10th.

Four well-known musical groups will perform at the Friday, May 10 Beach Night show and dance. The headline act will be The Drifters with Charlie Thomas, known for such hits as There Goes My Baby, Save the Last Dance for Me, and Up on the Roof.

Preceding them onstage will be The Clovers. This ensemble has produced an impressive string of 15 number-one songs, including Love Potion Number 9, One-Mint Julep, and Devil or Angel.

Charity event to feature twenty sports legends

Family Connection of SC will host its 5th Annual Charity Event presented by Vital Care EMS to benefit children in South Carolina who have special needs at 7 p.m. May 24 at the Marriott Greenville.

The event will feature 20 football greats including Heisman Trophy winners George Rogers, Mike Rozier and Johnny Rodgers and former Clemson Tigers head football coach Danny Ford. All proceeds from the event will benefit Family Connection, a statewide nonprofit organization that supports families who have children with disabilities, special healthcare needs or chronic illnesses.

Piedmont sets budget work session

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Piedmont Public Service District Board of Commissioners was postponed Monday night so that commission members could conduct a budget workshop prior to the meeting.

One issue facing the commission is the amount of revenue they will receive in the form of aid to local subdivisions, or the percentage of monies returned to the local area by the General Assembly.

Republican women to meet

The April meeting of the Anderson County Republican Women will be held on Monday, April 22 at Doolittle’s, 112 N Main Street in downtown Anderson.

Pelzer Council to meet at community building

The Town of Pelzer will hold their regular monthly meeting and a special worksession this Friday, Apr. 12 at the Pelzer Community Building located behind Bi-Lo. The worksession with town Attorney Jimmy King and Scott Slatten of the SC Municipal Association will be held at 11 a.m. Information related to how the annexation process works will be presented. The regular meeting of Council will be held at 12 noon.
