Barbecue cookoff and festival starts Friday

The Pig in the Park Barbecue Cookoff will be held May 18 and 19 in Williamston’s Mineral Spring Park. Activites will begin on Friday at 12 noon with barbecue and food sales, craft vendors, children’s play area and live entertainment by Barnyard on a Freight Train singing country music.

Belton to feature Bluegrass on Square

Belton’s City Square will be the scene of thigh slapping and foot tapping for bluegrass fans who come to see The Bluegrass Gentlemen and J. Max McKee take the stage on Friday, May 18. “We are so excited about hosting such a renowned Bluegrass musician as J. Max McKee and the newly formed band The Bluegrass Gentlemen!” stated organizer Tracy Wood.

Tri County Tech to host 5K Run

Tri-County Technical College is holding its third annual Tri-County 5K Road Race Saturday, May 19, at 8 a.m. at its Anderson Campus. The race starts and ends at the Anderson Campus located at 511 Michelin Boulevard. Walkers are welcome. All race proceeds will benefit the programs and services of the Anderson Campus.

Rydell cancels appearance, Ben E. King to perform at Blue Ridge Fest

Organizers of Blue Ridge Fest announced this week that featured entertainer Bobby Rydell has canceled his appearance due to health problems. Well-known performer, Ben E. King, has been booked for the evening. King is known for a number of hits including “Stand By Me,” “There Goes My Baby,” and his Latin-tinged ballad, “Spanish Harlem.” An award winning R&B musician, he is a great entertainer and is expected to put on a memorable show.

Relay for Life event schedule

The Second Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of North Anderson gets underway May 4 at 7 pm at Wren High School. The cancer awareness and fundraiser event will feature lots of entertainment as it is held overnight. Individuals and teams will camp out at the football stadium with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening.

Cycle racing returns to downtown Anderson

Pro-cyclists from across the nation and world will race in Anderson this Saturday, May 5 as part of The USA CRIT Series Speed Week. The series includes 7 races held over 10 days starting with the Athens Twilight held this past Saturday and ending in Sandy Springs, Georgia May 6. The series offers $150,000 in prize money to the Men’s and Women’s Professional/Elite Teams.

Blue Ridge Fest May 11

Bobby Rydell will entertain at Blue Ridge Fest

The 15th annual Blue Ridge Fest will take place May 11 from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative’s covered outdoor facility at 734 W. Main St. in Pickens. The festival boasts the largest classic car cruise-in event in the Upstate, along with a Beach Night show and dance.

The 31st annual Freedom Weekend Aloft festival (FWA) will return to Heritage Park in Simpsonville over Memorial Day weekend. The festival will paint the Upstate’s skyline with multicolored hot air balloons May 25 – 28., thanks to a continued partnership with Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS). FWA is recognized for its signature hot air balloons and the four day concert series with previously announced concerts for 2012 including Colbie Caillat, Gavin DeGraw, Jake Owen, Eddie Money and more.
