Church sponsors Wounded Warriors

By Stan Welch – A local church has insured that at least three wounded warriors will enjoy the annual retreat sponsored for them at Keowee Key, in Oconee County, this year. Each year the Wounded Warriors project brings in wounded Marines from Camp LeJeune for four days of recreation and relaxation in the Keowee Key area. This year, as they did last year, the members of the Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith held a spaghetti lunch fund raiser, and raised more than $1600.

Cedar Grove principal selected by peers for award

Principal of Cedar Grove Elementary School, Dr. Eunice Williams, has received the 2012 Tenenbaum Award presented by Bruce Moseley, Program Director for the School Leadership Executive Institute (SLEI) at the South Carolina Department of Education. Dr. Williams recently graduated from the School Leadership Executive Institute, and as a part of this program she was selected by her classmates as the Tenenbaum Award winner for the 2012 cohort.

 

State honors fallen service members

Senator Billy O’Dell and Rep. Mike Gambrell attended the sixth Annual Fallen Soldiers Ceremony and luncheon last Wednesday, as the families of eight soldiers killed in action this past year were honored.

Cooper recognized by State for industry recruitment efforts

Dan Cooper, of Parker Poe Consulting was recently honored by Gov. Nikki Haley and Secretary of Commerce, Bobby Hitt for being a strong leader in recruitment of industry in Anderson County. He has been an advocate for the existing industries and worked tirelessly to improve the county’s assets, state officials said. Cooper has assisted businesses and organizations in a number of education, infrastructure and workforce needs.

Ruritan Charter Member receives 60 year certificate

They built a successful Club, but only one charter member remains alive today – O.R. “Richard” Cothran.

Civilian Jesse Burgess, son of Jacquelynn M. Moore of Belton, S. C. and Julian A. Burgess, of Pelzer recently enlisted in the United States Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District, Raleigh, N. C.

Army Reserve Pfc. Trevor O. Parker has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.

Cooper recognized for recruiting efforts

Former State representative Dan Cooper, of Powdersville, has been honored for his efforts to attract jobs and industry to Anderson County. Cooper, who sat for six years as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee prior to his abrupt resignation from the House, was nominated by the Anderson County Economic Development Board as Ambassador of Economic Development for the County.

In Service – Thrasher

Air Force Airman Evan E. Thrasher graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

In Service – Garrison

Marine Corps Cpl. Scott D. Garrison, son of Wanda K. Garrison of Belton, recently reported for duty with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, Marine Aircraft Group 36, Okinawa, Japan.
