Relay for Life Event at Wren High School

Walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer when the Second Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of North Anderson gets underway with teams of residents gathering at Wren High School on May 4 at 7 pm. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening.

Guest column by Palmetto High Principal Dr. Mason Gary

(Editor’s Note – Dr. Gary was asked by The Journal to write about his time in School District One. He has included information about many of the improvements and accomplishments of Palmetto High and School District One during his time there.)

It is with mixed emotions that I write this letter to you because I have spent eighteen great years in Anderson School District One. As many of you know, I have been elected as superintendent at Anderson School District Three for the 2012-13 school year. I want to thank each of you for the relationship we have developed over the years and together we have accomplished many great things at Palmetto High.

Car wash to benefit PHS JROTC

The Williamston Police Department and the Palmetto High Junior ROTC will hold a car-wash to raise money for the PHSJROTC unit to help with expenses of attending leadership school. The carwash will be held May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Teachers to attend ExxonMobil Academy

Kani Garren, a fifth grade teacher at Fork Shoals School, Jessica Austin, a fourth grade teacher at Buena Vista Elementary; Kelly Hunt, a fourth grade teacher at Brook Glenn Elementary were selected to participate in the 2012 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in New Jersey in July.

Senator Graham to address Tri-County Tec graduates

Senator Lindsey Graham will deliver Tri-County Technical College’s spring commencement address Monday, May 7, at 6 p.m. at the Anderson Civic Center.

Approximately 659 students will be awarded degrees, diplomas and/or certificates during the College’s 50th anniversary commencement. In addition to families and guests of the graduates, alumni and other friends of the College are invited to attend the ceremony.

Arrest made in Woodmont Middle bomb threat

The Greenville County Sheriff’s office arrested a 13-year old female student from Woodmont Middle School in connection with the bomb threat made there earlier today (Thursday). The student has been charged with making a bomb threat and disturbing a school.

Spearman holds Spring Fling

Spearman Elementary held their annual Spring Fling on Friday, April 20. The event included lots of fun and food and activites that were enjoyed by all ages. Pictured – Lexi Sullivan enjoyed Mrs. Bartz face painting her nose.

District One interviewing for Palmetto High principal position

 Budget work session May 10

Anderson School District One will hold a budget work session at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 10 and are expected to have an administrative recommendation on the principal position at Palmetto High by that time.

During their meeting Tuesday, Superintendent Dr. Wayne Fowler told the board that the District has accepted applications for the position and will be interviewing candidates today (Wednesday).

Area schools receive copy-cat bomb threats

Two area schools have recently experienced bomb threats that are thought to be “copy-cat” incidents of a bomb threat at Ware Shoals High School last Thursday.

Tuesday afternoon the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a representative from the Greenville County School District and told that a note was found in the bathroom indicating that a bomb was present at Woodmont Middle School.

ACTC to showcase senior projects

The Anderson District 1 and 2 Career and Technology Center will have the Senior Showcase May 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The drop-in will feature Capstone Senior Projects from each of the nineteen programs offered at the Career and Technology Center.
