Terry Filippo named College Board AP Reader

Terry W. Filippo, English Teacher at Wren High School was selected to participate in the College Board’s Annual AP Reading in English Language. Each June, AP teachers and college faculty members from around the world gather in the United States to evaluate and score the free-response sections of the AP Exams. AP Readers are high school and college educators who represent many of the finest academic institutions in the world.

Relay for Life Event at Wren High School

Walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer when the Second Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of North Anderson gets underway with teams of residents gathering at Wren High School on May 4 at 7 pm. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening.

Spearman holds Spring Fling

Spearman Elementary held their annual Spring Fling on Friday, April 20. The event included lots of fun and food and activites that were enjoyed by all ages. Pictured – Lexi Sullivan enjoyed Mrs. Bartz face painting her nose.

Area schools receive copy-cat bomb threats

Two area schools have recently experienced bomb threats that are thought to be “copy-cat” incidents of a bomb threat at Ware Shoals High School last Thursday.

Tuesday afternoon the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a representative from the Greenville County School District and told that a note was found in the bathroom indicating that a bomb was present at Woodmont Middle School.

School Board approves personnel, transfers

Anderson School District One Board of Trustees approved personnel and heard preliminary budget information for the 2012-13 school year during their meeting Tuesday.

District One Teacher of the Year Kristen Hearn told the Board about an initiative she is coordinating along with other former District Teachers of the Year, to raise funds for a scholarship program for district one students who plan to go into teaching.

Area students finalists in talent competition

Melissa Hood, School Board member for Anderson One, recently entered District One students in 2012 BB&T “The School’s Got Talent” search and two of them made it to the top 11 finalists! They were selected from a panel of judges including members of the Hootie and the Blowfish band, Dean Felber and Mark Bryan along with Paul Graham.

13 District One schools receive gold, silver awards

Thirteen eligible schools in School District One received Gold or Silver Awards by the State Department of Education for either general performance, closing achievement gaps or growth in achievement.
“This is the first time all eligible schools are receiving recognition for their students overall academic achievement,” said Superintendent Dr. Wayne Fowler.

ACTC students to compete in NASA challenge

Four students enrolled in the Project Lead the Way Aerospace Engineering course at the Anderson Districts I & II Career &Technology Center are competing in the NASA Real-World/In-World Design Challenge. ACTC students that will compete include (left to right) are: Adam Seiler (Junior-Palmetto High School), Jonathan Gambrell (Junior-Wren High School), Luke Howell (Junior-Belton Honea Path High School), and Dillon Thompson (Junior-Palmetto High School).

Dr. Kelly Pew named superintendent for School District of Pickens County

Former Wren High Administrator Dr. Kelly Pew has been named the new superintendent for the School District of Pickens County. During a their meeting Monday, the school board unanimously approved Dr. Pew to replace Dr. Henry Hunt, who is retiring at the end of June.
