Shaw named AD, Head Football Coach at Palmetto

Coach Doug Shaw has been named Athletic Director and head football coach for Palmetto High School. He is slated to begin work July 1, 2013. He is currently Assistant Athletic Director, Head football coach and physical education teacher at Mauldin High School in Greenville County. He has been at Mauldin High for seven years where he was named the Big 16 Upstate Coach of the Year in 2009.

Shaw has a proven record of improving team performance. His ability to develop a working rapport with the players and coaches will prove beneficial. He is a firm believer that discipline and fundamentals are essential to a successful program and by implementing that philosophy the athletic program can progressively improve each year.

Shaw will be responsible for providing direction and leadership at Palmetto High for all athletic teams as they participate in the Western 3A Region. He has previously served at Myrtle Beach High School, North Myrtle Beach High and Carolina High.

Coach Shaw, stated, “I am very excited to be coming to Palmetto High. My previous coaching jobs have been very rewarding. I have tried to instill in the young men what it takes to be successful, not only on the field of play, but in the real world as well. This position holds the responsibility of developing young men as well as football players. I learned from the best, my father, athletic director and head football coach for 25 years, and I saw the time and commitment that it takes to fill this position. I look forward to the opportunity of working with the athletic program at Palmetto High.”

School safety a priority in District One budget

School Safety and security remains a priority for School District One for the upcoming school year.

During a work session Tuesday, the Anderson School District One Board of Trustees were presented five options to consider that increase armed security personnel in the District. Superintendent Dr. Wayne Fowler and Associate Superintendent David Havird presented information on current security personnel and options ranging from hiring additional School Resource Officers (SROs) to have a presence in all 14 schools to hiring security guards for elementary schools.

School budget reflects growth, security

During a budget work session Tuesday, the Anderson School District One Board reviewed the proposed budget which had several changes from the previous version.

Revisions reflect estimated growth in the district of 91 students which will result in additional revenues of $191,191, based on the EFA Base Student Cost of $2,101, according to Associate Superintendent David Havird.

LeCroy leaving Palmetto

It is official, Palmetto High Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Jody LeCroy is leaving School District One. The Anderson School District One Board of Trustees approved his resignation during their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, Apr. 29.

District One anticipating six new teaching positions

During a work session Tuesday following their regular meeting, the Anderson School District One Board heard a preliminary budget report reflecting the need for 6.5 fulltime employees and 1.4 additional support staff. At present, the budget also reflects the highest teacher to pupil ratio in the upstate at 23.5 to 1.

District One Schools recognized for performance

Anderson One schools received 10 Gold awards for general performance and one silver award for general performance from the SC Department of Education. Two schools earned Gold for general performance and closing the achievement gap. Three other schools earned gold for general performance and silver for closing the gap. Two schools are ineligible for awards.

School District One to implement intruder/shooter response plan

School District One officials have been intensely involved in evaluating and improving safety and security of the District’s 14 schools since the shooting incident that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary in December.

During their meeting Tuesday, District One Board members were updated on safety measures the district has already undertaken and presented information on future plans including implementing a Violent Intruder Response plan and providing proactive training.

On December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The incident is the second deadliest shooting in United States history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre.

On the national level, the shootings prompted renewed debate about gun control and on the local level, a flurry of review and implementation of school safety and security procedures.

So how safe are school’s in District One?

Associate Superintendent David Havird said overall, “School District One is in excellent shape. We were in good shape before. We have made the transition to excellent,” he said.

School Safety meeting results in suggestions, advisory committee

Approximately forty people, including educators, law enforcement officials, and parents jammed into the offices of the Anderson legislative delegation Monday for a meeting on school safety, hosted by District 8 Rep. Don Bowen.

The meeting was a response to efforts by parents with children in the county’s elementary schools, which are currently unprotected by trained security or law enforcement personnel.

The public is invited to the meeting which will be held Monday Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. at the Anderson County Legislative Delegation office in Anderson to talk about school safety and security. Representative Don Bowen will host the meeting. Bowen is introducing legislation on the state level to help with the issue of school safety.
