Job creation up, unemployment down in Anderson County

Anderson County has built an enviable reputation in the last few years for attracting manufacturing and the quality jobs that usually accompany such large capital investments.

The efforts that have led to those investments and jobs have clearly paid off, as the unemployment rate in the county has reached its lowest point since July 2008. Figures released by the county this week show unemployment at 6.8 per cent, down from 8.3 per cent in April of 2012.The percentage of unemployed peaked at 9.2 per cent in June and July of last year.

County seeing some economic activity

By Stan Welch – In a remarkably weak economy, Anderson County has suffered less than many areas. More than a thousand jobs have been created, along with nearly $2 billion in capital investment. That level of economic activity is always felt far beyond the scope of the actual projects; and a review of the latest public works report, issued weekly by the county, shows that activity is beginning to pick up in the District Six and District Seven areas.

Economic incentives benefit existing companies

The majority of the agenda at Tuesday night’s County Council meeting dealt with economic development, as Council discussed and approved a number of agreements with companies already located in Anderson, or considering coming here.

Projects expand economic development

Anderson County continues to pursue and attract economic development opportunities. Two projects are currently progressing, as the County Council continues to support incentives offered to entice various businesses and industries.

Officials taking steps for economic development in area

Local and state officials joined members of the Palmetto Area Economic Development Committee (PAEDC) for a conference Friday to discuss marketing and promoting the area to business and industry. A varied group of people representing the community heard from officials involved in state and local economic development.

Representatives of the State Department of Commerce, Anderson County Economic Development and local educators shared information about programs and steps related to being  successful in recruiting business, industry and jobs to the area.

PAEDC to meet with state officials on Economic Development

Members of the Palmetto Area Economic Development Committee (PAEDC) will meet this Friday with local and state officials working on economic development in the Williamston, Pelzer and West Pelzer area.

A special meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 24 at the Anderson School District One office in Williamston. Representatives of the Department of Commerce, Anderson County and others are expected to attend.

Town to purchase property for industrial development site

During their meeting Monday, Williamston Town Council approved first reading on an ordinance to purchase approximately 70 acres of property located within the town limits and acted on a recommendation from the town’s Park Committee concerning the Brookdale Park restroom project.

Local officials began laying the groundwork and working out details for an area wide economic development committee during a meeting held Tuesday evening at the Lander Memorial Library.

The Palmetto Area Economic Development Committee will be comprised of local community leaders who have offered to bring their abilities to the committee’s goal of attracting an industry or industries to the Williamston – Pelzer – West Pelzer area.

Document clarifies agencies relationship

As part of the County’s ongoing efforts to attract economic development and jobs to Anderson County, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been crafted which reaffirms and redefines the relationship between the County’s Economic Development Office (EDO) and Innovate Anderson.
