ParkFest turnout not as expected

Although turnout for a new festival type event called “ParkFest – A Heros Celebration” was not what organizers expected, those who did attend were treated to a first class recognition program for local first responders along with music, fun and food. Mayor Mack Durham, who encouraged the event as part of his plan to bring more festivals and activities to the town said he thought the event went good for a first time event planned on a short timeline. “It was a good first year event,” he said. “The first responders were happy with the recognition.”

GWBA readies for Party in the Park May 31

The Greater Williamston Business Association (GWBA) is planning an event on Friday, May 31, that will provide free entertainment and activities for the Williamston community and surrounding area while promoting local business.

“Party in the Park” will feature live entertainment by one of the Upstate’s favorite bands, the Eric Scott Band. Free Kids’ Activities will be provided by the GWBA from 5 pm-8:30pm with Eddie’s Trackless Trains and 3 Kids Inflatables. The park playground will be open to kids until the event ends, organizers said.

Organizers preparing for new ParkFest Celebration Event – Honoring First Responders

Organizers of “ParkFest” are gearing up for the final days of preparation for a new event they hope will be an annual one for the Town of Williamston.

Jack Ellenburg and Nancy Carroll, with help and encouragement from Williamston Mayor Mack Durham, the Town of Williamston, the Defenders Law Enforcement Motorcycle group and others, are putting the final touches on the event which is being billed as “A Hero’s Celebration.”

Budget approved without Main St. SC program

Williamston Town Council unanimously approved first reading on their 2013-14 budget Monday, but without funding for an economic development program and coordinator.

The budget projects revenues of $2,258,704 to expenses of $2,258,704.

A motion by Mayor Mack Durham to pass the budget as presented with $78,043 for a coordinator and other expenses for the proposed Main St. SC revitalization program was defeated by a 1-4 vote with only the mayor in favor. A motion by Councilman Otis Scott to pass the budget on first reading taking out the funding for the program passed unanimously.

Approximately forty residents, business owners, and elected officials gathered to hear an official of the South Carolina Municipal Association’s Main Street program make her pitch Tuesday evening.

Beppie LeGrande gave a presentation explaining the process that the downtown revitalization program offers to small towns. The program, which began in the late 1970s, and arrived in South Carolina in 1985, began in response to the emergence of malls and big box stores which often sucked the business from the downtown areas.

Administrator position defunded, final check cut

The position of Administrator for the Town of Williamston was eliminated with a 5-0 unanimous vote of Williamston Town Council during a special called meeting last Thursday.

The town’s former administrator Phyllis Lollis has been issued a severance check for 60 days pay as stated in the original hiring agreement, Mayor Mack Durham said Wednesday. The final payment, which the mayor said amounted to about $11,400, included three weeks of accumulated vacation time.

Administrator position to be decided Thursday

A special called meeting of Williamston Town Council will be held at 6 p.m. this Thursday, Apr. 11 to resolve the matter of what to do about the town’s administrator position and on several other “big decision” issues. Phyllis Lollis was suspended from her duties as the town administrator by Mayor Dr. R. Mack Durham when he took office on Jan. 2.

Burgess wins Ward Two Council seat

In a special election decided by just 16 votes Tuesday, Rockey Burgess defeated Mike Looper to win the Williamston Ward Two seat.

Burgess had 179 votes to Looper’s 166. A margin of only three votes separated the candidates until absentee ballots were counted. Burgess garned thirteen of the sixteen absentee ballot votes.

Farmers Market planned during monthly events – In Mineral Spring Park

The Palmetto Area Economic Development Committee recently announced that a new Palmetto Farmers Markets will debut this spring. The Palmetto Market is a local farmers and craft market that will be located in Williamston’s Mineral Spring Park during monthly scheduled events.

Williamston Special Election today – Apr. 2

Williamston voters will go back to the polls today (Tuesday, Apr. 2) to decide who will represent the town on the Council Ward Two seat. Rockey Burgess and Mike Looper will face off for the council seat. The council term expires Dec. 31, 2014.
